Product Requirement Document: Inner Worlds
Designing a Gamified Platform for Youth Empowerment
Product Requirement Document for Product Management with UX Course, MAGES Institute + Design Challenge Submission
🧩 Problem Statement
Source: Singapore Design Awards – Participation Brief
This project draws inspiration from a real-world design challenge I discovered through Instagram, hosted by the Singapore Design Awards. By aligning my assignment with this brief, I’m able to simultaneously fulfill course requirements and participate in the competition — addressing two objectives with one solution.
Challenge Statement: How might we harness the increased use of online learning platforms among children and youth to foster positive virtual communities and friendships — ultimately reducing the negative influences experienced by youth-at-risk and youth offenders?
🎮 Solution Overview
Inner Worlds is a gamified role-playing platform designed to support youth—especially those at risk—by providing a safe, immersive space for self-exploration, growth, and connection. Through guided quests and decision-making challenges, players navigate their avatar through virtual scenarios that mirror real-life dilemmas, receiving feedback that encourages emotional awareness, empathy, and critical thinking.
The platform uses storytelling and gameplay mechanics inspired by titles like MapleStory to create an engaging experience that resonates with younger audiences. Avatars allow users to explore sensitive topics—such as reaching out for help or managing conflict—in a low-stakes, non-threatening environment. This makes it easier for them to process their emotions and build coping strategies.
Key features include:
-
Personalized feedback based on in-game choices to encourage reflection and personal development.
-
Discreet behavioral monitoring to flag potential signs of distress, enabling timely and remote support from mentors or professionals without being invasive.
-
Community and peer-based features to foster positive social connections and reduce feelings of isolation.
-
Career exploration quests, which expose users to new interests and skill-building opportunities that reinforce confidence and direction.
As players progress, their avatars visually evolve to reflect their emotional and personal journey—making growth feel tangible and rewarding.
🧩 Feature Discovery
✨ Avatar Creation
Players begin by designing a personalized avatar and completing a short personality test. The results shape their in-game experience, tailoring challenges and interactions to align with their emotional and behavioral traits.
🧠 Decision-Making Scenarios
The game presents interactive scenarios that reflect real-life challenges—such as conflict resolution, managing peer pressure, and navigating future aspirations. These situations require players to think critically, weigh consequences, and make impactful choices.
🌱 Career Exploration Quests
Players can explore various career paths through immersive quests that simulate roles such as a game designer, teacher, doctor, and more. These quests provide insights into different professions while encouraging self-discovery and skill development.
💬 Emotional Intelligence Integration
Scenarios are designed to help players develop core emotional intelligence skills, including stress management, communication, empathy, and self-reflection. This supports the growth of healthier coping strategies and interpersonal awareness.
🌀 Dynamic Evolution System
Every decision a player makes affects their avatar’s development—visually and narratively. This includes changes in appearance, unlocking new abilities, and shifting the direction of quests, symbolizing the player’s journey and personal growth.
🔎Feature Prioritization and Product Roadmap
To ensure a focused and phased approach to building Inner Worlds, features have been prioritized based on their impact on user experience, technical dependencies, and overall contribution to the product vision. The roadmap is divided into six key phases over 12 months, starting from core feature development to gameplay refinement and launch readiness. Each phase outlines the primary objective, prioritized features, and the rationale behind their sequencing—ensuring that foundational systems are built first, followed by layered enhancements that deepen engagement and emotional impact.
🌟 Key Features, User Stories & Acceptance Criteria
To ensure a seamless and meaningful player experience, we’ve translated core game features into user stories grounded in real player needs. Each feature is accompanied by detailed acceptance criteria to define the conditions for successful implementation and testing. This approach helps align design, development, and QA teams while maintaining focus on user-centered outcomes. The following table outlines the key features that shape Inner Worlds and the measurable goals associated with them.
💰 Monetization Strategy
To ensure accessibility while maintaining long-term sustainability, Inner Worlds adopts a hybrid monetization model that supports diverse user preferences and engagement levels. The strategy is designed to be ethical, inclusive, and aligned with the game’s core purpose of personal growth and positive social impact.

📊 Data Analytics & Tracking
A built-in analytics system will monitor player choices, progression, engagement patterns, and in-game behaviors. This data will inform future feature development, scenario tuning, and real-time improvements to enhance player growth and support at-risk behaviors.
📊 Key Metrics
To measure success and guide ongoing improvements, Inner Worlds will track a mix of engagement, progression, and decision-making metrics that reflect both player behavior and experience quality.
🔹 Primary Metric
🎯 Day 1 Retention Rate: How many players return the day after their first session?
Why it matters: Indicates initial player interest and whether the game’s onboarding experience and early content are compelling enough to bring players back. High retention = strong first impression.
Funnel: App Download → Account Creation → First Gameplay Session → Return to App on Day 2
Goal: Assess how well the first touchpoint motivates players to re-engage.
Tracking: Measure the percentage of players who return to the game within 24 hours of first play.
🔹 Secondary Metrics
⏱️ Session Length: How long do players stay engaged in each session?
Why it matters: Reflects the immersiveness and stickiness of the game. Longer sessions indicate high engagement with quests, scenarios, or avatar development.
Funnel: App Download → Account Creation → First Gameplay → Subsequent Sessions
Goal: Understand content engagement across the player base.
Tracking: Analyze average session duration and track changes over time.
🚀 Player Progression Rate: How far do players progress through the game?
Why it matters: Shows whether the game’s structure and difficulty curve are balanced and motivating. If players are dropping off early, something might be blocking their path.
Funnel: App Download → Account Creation → Completion of First Quest → Subsequent Quest Completion
Goal: Ensure players are advancing through core content like quests and decisions.
Tracking: Monitor quest completion rates, key milestone achievements, and drop-off points.
🔮 In-Game Decision-Making Impact: Are players meaningfully engaging with game choices?
Why it matters: Decisions are at the heart of Inner Worlds. This metric reflects whether players feel their choices matter and if they influence their avatar’s evolution or scenario outcomes.
Funnel: App Download → Account Creation → Interaction with Decision-Making Scenarios → Changes in Avatar or Story Outcomes
Goal: Evaluate if the game’s branching narratives and decisions are engaging and impactful.
Tracking: Measure decision frequency, choice diversity, and resulting changes in avatar growth or quest paths.
